Summary

The NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Construction Engineering and Management was established through a partnership between NSERC, a consortium of construction companies, and the University of Alberta, and was the first of its kind in construction research. The primary goal of the Chair is to build the critical mass required for a major endeavour in the area of computer simulation in construction and to ensure this established critical mass is sustainable over the long term. Subsequent goals include establishing research programs of relevance to the construction industry, enhancing the overall quality of construction engineering education at the University of Alberta, and transferring research and technology to industry. Under the Chair's fourth term, renewed from January 1, 2012 to January 1, 2016, the research program focusses on enhancing the competitiveness of partner companies and the Alberta construction industry at large, through research that utilizes simulation models for studying and understanding issues related to competitiveness, and through deployment of tools that can support improvement.

This Chair term will build on past work in Construction Synthetic Environments to develop simulation models and simulation-based tools that:

  1. assist stakeholders in understanding the intricate details of the construction supply chain and the impact of various strategic factors on competitiveness;
  2. enable the identification of, and experimentation with, the most appropriate methods for efficiency gains; and
  3. ensure the deployment of a new generation of tools that will enhance planning and control through integration of new technologies, management strategies and real-time input.

Through these themes, this research expands the work accomplished under the Chair's first, second and third terms (January 1, 1997 to January 1, 2012), which included new advances in construction simulation and construction operations modelling and the development of advanced technologies for improving productivity in the field. These advances have positively impacted the productivity and accuracy of our partner companies' activities.
