Summary

Having successfully developed an integrated plan to ensure safe, high quality water for its customers, the Halifax Regional Water Commission (HRWC) is now taking the next step finding the right people to do the research for the future. Dr. Graham Gagnon, P.Eng., Dalhousie's Canada Research Chair in Water Quality and Treatment, and his research team were identified by the HRWC as the right team for this important task.

As the NSERC/Halifax Regional Water Commission Industrial Research Chair in Water Quality and Treatment, Dr. Gagnon will conduct an integrated research program that addresses the protection of public health, while ensuring that the sustainability of drinking water infrastructure is achieved. In particular, Dr. Gagnon's team, with the technical support of the HRWC will construct a pilot plant in January 2007 at the J. Douglas Kline Water Supply Plant at Pockwock Lake in Halifax.

The pilot plant, comparable to a backyard laboratory, will allow Dr. Gagnon's team to test their ideas on an independent parallel system, without compromising the full-scale system. The program will serve as a testing bed for new technology and processes for effective management of the water supply system.

The ultimate goal of this NSERC Chair's research program is to focus on the water infrastructure so consumers can be assured it meets current and long-term standards without adversely affecting cost. This unique research program will ultimately aid in the decision-making process for the HRWC and many utilities in Atlantic Canada, as well as abroad, about their water infrastructure.
