Summary
The NSERC Multisectorial Industrial Research Chair in Coatings and Surface Engineering (MIC-CSE) focuses its research on the development of a new generation of "clean" (non-polluting) vacuum-based technologies for the synthesis of nanostructured coating materials and coating systems, for use in different sectors of vital importance to Canada. These include optics and photonics, glazings for architectural glass, aerospace and manufacturing components, energy generation and saving, and exploration of outer space.
The chair activities led by Ludvik Martinu, in collaboration with Jolanta E. Klemberg-Sapieha, will create a unique multisectorial-multidisciplinary environment that will stimulate advancement of knowledge of physical and chemical processes in low-pressure plasmas and of plasma-surface interactions, as well as understanding of thin film growth and of structure-property relationships on the nanometer scale. The MIC-CSE's research program will explore, together with our seven industrial partners, new application-specific surface engineering solutions, related to the tailored optical, mechanical, tribological, corrosion, thermal, electrical and other functional or multifunctional properties of various coating architectures.
