Summary

The Industrial Research Chair in Sustainable Energy Technology and Energy Efficiency (TERRE) will focus its work on multithreaded coupling in northern conditions and in the context of green energy production and intelligent network management.

The main objectives of the Chair are to develop an integrated supply concept to meet the needs of remote areas, specifically in terms of electricity, heat, food and transportation. Energy efficiency and intelligent network management are central to this multithreaded production approach. The coupling of wind, tidal, solar and biomass energy with control and storage devices will provide a robust and reliable solution to reduce diesel fuel consumption. This approach will reduce the environmental impact while making energy for residents in remote areas more cost effective.

For example, the completion of an energy coupling and storage test bench will provide the opportunity to simulate laboratory tests in order to transfer the concept into an actual facility by the end of the Chair's mandate. The extreme operating conditions associated with northern environments and the use of materials and processes to life cycles that are more conducive to the environment are some of the challenges that face the Chair.

Technician training

For the Cégep de Jonquière, the Chair is one of the measures undertaken in 2010 following the establishment of the attestation of college studies in sustainable energy technology and energy efficiency (TERRE) program as well as the creation of business/school sites. In some 40 laboratories, the Cégep intends to align the activities of the Chair to those of the nine physical techniques, and involve students in carrying out its mission.

Private partnership

The Chair research program is conducted in synergy with several industry partners in such areas as engineering, automation, production, operation and the environment. It will increase the level of cutting-edge expertise and create business opportunities for Canada in an innovative sector. Technology transfer activities provide an opportunity for companies to have a skilled workforce by training new technicians.

With the establishment of this Research Chair, the Cégep de Jonquière becomes a must for training, research and development in a key sector of society. The cluster of regional players inspire leadership in collaboration with other parts of Canada in the appropriation of resources to home-made solutions for home-made problems.
