Role

Chairholder since 2012

Summary

The NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Applied Mineralogy was established in the College of the North Atlantic to undertake industrially relevant mineralogical and geochemical research. The Chair will focus on the scientific and technological challenges around exploratory activity faced by the mining industry. The Chair will work closely with the mineral resource sector of Newfoundland and Labrador, including the industry stakeholders, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the provincial and federal departments of natural resources. An additional objective of the Chair program is to train more highly qualified personnel to meet the future needs of Canadian mining companies. The industrial sponsor is Vale Ltd.—one of the world's leading mining companies. The key research activities of the Chair will be to further the technical understanding and development of novel exploration strategies of magmatic ore bodies. The research will help improve the resource recovery process through a better understanding of geology and the character of ore deposits.

The Chairholder, Gary Thompson, has more than 20 years of international research and senior technical management experience. He has an extensive network of active contacts at senior technical and management levels with mining companies and universities in Canada and worldwide. The proposed research program will be closely linked to Vale's mining and metallurgical operations, and its research needs. Collaboration with Vale personnel, who will provide expertise and support, will ensure that successful research will be applied in industry.
