G8 Countries

The research councils of the G8 countries* have established a multilateral funding initiative for conducting international research. The initiative aims to support research on topics of global relevance that can best be tackled by a multinational approach.

Funding should help researchers to cooperate in consortia consisting of at least three partners from separate participating countries. The multinational research consortia must show an interdisciplinary approach in addressing problems within the scope of the described call theme.

Partners include:

  • Canada – Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
  • France – Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR)
  • Germany – German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • Japan – Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
  • Russia – Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR)
  • United Kingdom – Research Councils of the United Kingdom (RCUK)
  • United States – National Science Foundation (NSF)

For more details, consult the Call for Proposals.

*Italy will not be participating in this call for proposals.

The Americas

The Inter-American Collaboration in Materials Research (CIAM) is an international, multi-agency initiative that supports collaborative activities in materials research among researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States. NSERC has issued a request for proposals for two types of activities:

  • research projects that present an opportunity for inter-American collaboration, and
  • collaborative mobility grants that support the establishment of new inter-American collaborations or the networking efforts of scientists from these countries.

The funding can be used to cover the direct costs of research or to support other activities such as the international mobility of students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. It can also be used to cover the travel costs associated with international research collaborations. More details

Bilateral Opportunities

France

NSERC and the Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) have agreed to jointly fund collaborative research and innovation projects conducted by research teams from both countries. Requests for proposals will solicit applications for research projects in strategic priority areas of mutual interest. Research teams from Canada and France will prepare complementary proposals to their respective agencies in parallel, following the normal application process for the Strategic Project Grants program at NSERC and the theme-driven programs at ANR. Refer to the Detailed Application Instructions.

Italy

NSERC and the This link will take you to another Web site Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) have agreed to launch a pilot call for joint research projects in the area of next-generation manufacturing research, with a requirement for a specific focus within Canada on automotive manufacturing. This joint funding opportunity is focused on academic-industry collaborative research and development. Canadian industrial partners will be required to put forth direct cash/in-kind support associated with the academic research efforts. Canadian researchers or research teams will be funded through This link will take you to another Web site Automotive Partnership Canada (APC), and CNR will fund successful Italian researchers through their This link will take you to another Web site Factories of the Future initiative.

Japan

JSPS Invitation Fellowship Programs

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitation Fellowship Programs promote international cooperation by allowing Japanese scientists to host foreign colleagues to participate in scientific research. Short-term and long-term cooperation projects are eligible under this program. Pre-existing contacts between scientists in Japan and in other countries are considered a favourable condition to success. More details

JSPS Researcher Exchange Program

Japanese researchers participating in the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Researcher Exchange Program are eligible to receive a maintenance allowance from NSERC during their stay in Canada.

For more information, please visit the This link will take you to another Web site JSPS Researcher Exchange Program Annual Call for Proposals.

JSPS is responsible for informing applicants to the JSPS Researcher Exchange Program wishing to conduct research in Canada that the proposed research must clearly be intended to advance knowledge in one of the natural sciences or in engineering. Other considerations for assessing eligibility of proposed research are listed in the Guidelines for the Evaluation of Subject Matter Eligibility of Discovery Grant Applications Related to the Health Sciences page of NSERC’s Web site.

Eligible Canadian institutions are restricted to the Canadian universities listed in the List of Eligible Institutions page of NSERC’s Web site.
