The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced that NSERC will support 18 community colleges that partner with businesses to collaborate on applied research projects. These new College and Community Innovation Program projects were announced at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, and they include partnerships related to new clean energy technologies, more efficient forestry practices, and technology designed to assist senior citizens.

On November 9, 2011, with partners from the aluminum industry in attendance, the Aluminum Research and Development Centre of Quebec (CQRDA) and the organizing committee for the 2011 edition of CÉDDI-AL, a Quebec-wide, French-language conference on energy and sustainable development in the aluminum industry, jointly opened this conference and launched the 35th edition of Al13, a prestigious magazine devoted to this industry. The featured personality and subject of the main interview in this new edition was Dr. Suzanne Fortier, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Optical Guitars: Sound and Light—an exhibit that profiles how Canadian-led research in fibre optics is leading innovation in music—opened on October 20, 2011, at the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Produced in partnership with NSERC, the exhibit looks at how fibre optic cabling can be used in an acoustic and electric guitar to generate music from light waves. The exhibit features the research of Canada Research Chair in Future Photonics Systems Raman Kashyap of École Polytechnique de Montréal, and Hans Peter Loock of Queen’s University.
