Strengthening collaborative research and training ties with Germany

At the 6th Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council, hosted in Ottawa, Dr. B. Mario Pinto, President, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Dr. Peter Strohschneider, President, German Research Foundation, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) finalized changes to improve a joint NSERC-DFG student training program. Through NSERC’s Collaborative Research and Training Experience Program (CREATE) and DFG’s International Research Training Groups (IRTG), there is an opportunity for student exchanges between Canada and Germany.
The changes are as follows:
- Harmonized funding schedules for applicants successful in both CREATE and IRTG competitions—CREATE grants can be been dispensed over a 9-year period, up from the current 6-year period, matching IRTG funding schedule. Note: the overall amount of funding provided by the CREATE grant remains the same.
- The lead CREATE applicant will be able to travel to Germany with the funds provided by the CREATE grant once per year. For example, to accompany students travelling for internships and/or to meet with their German partners.
The changes, in response to applicants’ feedback, will simplify the mid-term review process and increase the level of collaboration and exchange between Canadian and German research teams. NSERC and DFG look forward to continuing their strong working relationship into the future and further their collaborative efforts to foster international cooperation and innovation in the NSE.
