Barbara Sherwood Lollar

Barbara Sherwood Lollar FRSC (BA Harvard University; PhD University of Waterloo) completed an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cambridge University, UK before joining the University of Toronto in 1992. She is a Professor, Senior Fellow of Massey College, Director of the Stable Isotope Laboratory, and Canada Research Chair Tier I in Isotopes of the Earth and the Environment.

Major research themes in stable isotope geochemistry include: remediation of organic contaminants in near surface groundwaters; investigation of carbon storage in deep saline aquifers; and geochemical controls on deep subsurface microbiology. Sherwood Lollar’s group has collaborated extensively with industrial partners, consultants and regulators in Canada, Europe and the United States in applications of her research. These include the development of new techniques for using stable isotope tracers to determine the fate and distribution of organic contaminants in groundwater, and the effectiveness of environmental remediation systems.

In 2000, she was profiled as one of TIME magazine's “Leaders for the 21st Century” based on her research on innovative techniques for tracking organic contaminants in groundwater.
