S.C. (Chan) Wirasinghe has been a professor at the University of Calgary's Department of Civil Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering, since 1976. He is the Founding Dean Emeritus of the Schulich School. He is currently Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Transportation and the Academic Director of the Centre for Transportation of the Van Horne Institute.
Dr. Wirasinghe is a Fulbright Scholar. He received an honourary DSc from the University of Moratuwa in 2001; APEGGA’s highest honor, the Centennial Award, in 2003; the Minerva Mentor of the Year Award from the Alberta Women’s Science Network in 2006; and was named Calgary's Citizen of the Year for 2005. In 2009, he was made an honourary life fellow of Engineers Canada.
Dr. Wirasinghe has over 30 years of significant experience in transportation engineering and planning. His current research is in the areas of public transportation, air transportation, mitigating the effects of natural disasters and transportation in developing countries. He has over 190 publications and has supervised or co-supervised 12 PhDs.
Dr. Wirasinghe holds a PhD and MS in Civil Engineering (Transportation) from the University of California at Berkeley and a BSc in Engineering (Civil Engineering) from the University of Ceylon.
Dr. Wirasinghe is a member of NSERC's Executive Committee and chairs its Committee on Research Integrity (CRI).
