Changes to NSERC Policies Regarding Paid Parental Leave for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is pleased to announce that the duration of a paid parental leave for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows is being increased. For a paid parental leave starting on April 1, 2015 or later, the maximum duration will be six months instead of four. This harmonizes our policy with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The change applies to current holders of an NSERC postgraduate scholarship (CGS, CGS Vanier, PGS, and IPS) and holders of an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDFs and Banting Fellowships), as well as for students and fellows who are paid from their supervisors NSERC grant. As has been the case in the past, parental leave payments are made subject to funds being available.
