Tips for potential applicants: How do I find an organization to nominate me for an Industrial R&D Fellowship?
There are a number of ways to find a sponsoring organization:
NSERC has already approved hundreds of organizations to participate in our industrial scholarship and fellowship programs (consult the List of Eligible Organizations). Some of the organizations listed have also provided a list of the broad areas in which much of their research is focused.
Talk to your PhD/postdoctoral supervisor and other faculty members in your department. They may know of organizations undertaking research in your field.
Consult the workopolisCampus.com database which contains résumés of recent graduates. You may also post your résumé there and check out the positions advertised by employers.
Use Industry Canada’s Company Directories to help you find organizations doing research in your field. From there, you can check an organization’s own Web site to determine if it would be of interest to you. Many organizations post job openings on their sites. Even if an organization does not have any positions listed that require your particular qualifications, if they appear to be a great match for your expertise, get in touch with them anyway. Tell them about the IRDF program and that NSERC could potentially provide part of your salary.
Try a general Web search using your favourite browser (e.g., Google, Dogpile). Conduct a search using key words relevant to your area of expertise (e.g., a search using Polymers + Canadian companies, provided dozens of links).
Check the Web site of professional associations to which you belong. Many professional associations provide employment services or opportunities to post positions and résumés.
Look for job advertisements in newspapers or the scientific journals in your field.
Use an on-line employment search service such as Monster.
Look through the list of attendees from any conferences you have attended. Are there any organizations represented that would be interested in your research experience?
