What is the purpose of the supplement?

The Summer Programs in Japan or Taiwan provide graduate students in science and engineering with a hands-on research experience and an introduction to a different culture, language and university research system.

Awards are held for approximately eight weeks, from June to August. Exact start dates vary each year; successful candidates will be informed of the final program schedule.

Eligibility

At the time of application, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
  • be enrolled in a graduate program in the natural sciences or engineering at a Canadian institution;
  • have received, or started the process of obtaining, advance acceptance from a potential host researcher in Japan or Taiwan; and
  • hold, or be applying for, a Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS), Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS) or an Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS).

Review procedures and selection criteria

Applicants successful in the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS), eligible Vanier CGS, CGS, PGS or IPS competitions will be given priority for these awards. Applicants will be judged according to the criteria for a CGS-MSFSS:

  • Linkage between the current program of research goals, the proposed research/study activities at the host institution and the future research/career goals, including consideration of:
    • Significance, feasibility and merit of proposed research study activities at the foreign institution;
    • Justification for the choice of host institution or host supervisor;
    • Relevance and anticipated benefits of the proposed research/study activities abroad to the candidate’s current graduate degree training.

For the Taiwan Program, approximately eight awards are available.

For the Japan Program, approximately 15 awards (divided between NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR) are available for all Canadian applicants.

The results of both competitions are announced in March.
