What kind of support does this scholarship provide?

The NSERC/MITACS Scholarships Program supports graduate students so they can undertake mathematical research with an eligible partner organization. The research must involve the use of advanced mathematical techniques. The applicant and the partner organization must meet the eligibility criteria and follow the general rules and regulations of the NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS 1 or IPS 2) program.

Effective September 1, 2008, NSERC will accept NSERC/MITACS nominations for qualified foreign students. Please refer to the section on Foreign Student Candidates for IPS.

Value of scholarships

The NSERC/MITACS Scholarship offers the following funding each year, for up to two years at the master’s level or up to three years at the doctoral level:

  • NSERC contributes $15,000;
  • the partner organization contributes $7,500;
  • MITACS contributes $7,500.

Of the total $30,000 per year, per project, the graduate student will receive $22,500 per year as a scholarship, and the academic supervisor will receive the remaining $7,500 per year for further research in the specified area.

How do you apply?

Students wishing to apply for a joint NSERC/MITACS Scholarship must follow the same application procedures as for an NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship Program (IPS 1 or IPS 2) program, and they also must submit additional information required by MITACS. NSERC will accept applications at any time.

NSERC and MITACS will jointly evaluate each application.

Academic supervisors must request approval from their Office of Research Services, and the approval signature must be included on the Memorandum submitted with the proposal.
  2. A minimum one page (plus references) free-form description of the mathematical tools and techniques to be utilized by the student during the research (MS Word/Adobe PDF format).
  3. The MITACS Questionnaire:

This section must be completed by the academic supervisor.

  3. Is the supervisor an owner or a co-owner of the partner organization, or does the supervisor participate in the day-to-day management of the organization? (A researcher's own consulting company or sole proprietorship is not eligible to collaborate on a project in which the researcher is the applicant or a co-investigator. Situations where the researcher is a part owner are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.) If so, you may need to complete the Conflict of Interest Declaration.
