What is the purpose of the supplements?

The purpose of the RDC Ocean Industries Research supplements is to attract and develop the world-class talent required to drive innovation and R&D in Newfoundland and Labrador’s ocean industries, including offshore petroleum, ocean technology, fisheries and aquaculture, and marine science. These supplements represent a strategic investment by the Research & Development Corporation (RDC) of Newfoundland and Labrador in both the highly qualified people required by industry and the next generation of R&D leaders in ocean industries.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

These supplements target graduate students who receive a CGS or PGS award and are interested in studies and supervised research in a field related to ocean industries. At the time of application, you must be working, studying or planning to enroll in applied sciences, engineering and technology programs related to ocean industries.

Prior to initial disbursement, the student must be accepted in a program of study related to ocean industries and be registered as a full-time student at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Any student that does not receive a CGS or PGS, including international students, must complete the full RDC Student Research Awards application and apply directly. Additional information is available on the This link will take you to another Web site RDC’s Web site.

What kind of support do these supplements provide?

These supplements provide support to high calibre students working towards a master’s or doctoral degree related to ocean industries. There are up to 10 supplements available to CGS or PGS award holders, but the total is subject to change (based on the quality of research proposals received and the recommendations of the RDC Research Awards Committee).

Student research supervisors will receive a research allowance of up to $3,000/yr for graduate students. This funding will be in support of the research supervisor’s costs (i.e., materials, travel and other costs) associated with the proposed research activities.
