What is the purpose of the supplement?

The purpose of the Canadian Poultry Research Council (CPRC) Postgraduate Scholarship Supplement is to:

  • encourage and support graduate students to carry out research in an aspect of poultry science;
  • build Canada’s intellectual capacity in poultry science; and
  • promote graduate research in poultry science at Canadian universities.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

You must hold either a Alexander Graham Bell CGS (M or D), PGS (M or D), IPS (1 or 2), or Vanier CGS. You must be planning to study (entering the first year of a master’s or doctoral program) at a Canadian university, preferably in the faculty of either agriculture or veterinary medicine (although other faculties will be considered), where you will be working on a research project encompassing some aspect of poultry science.

If you receive a supplement, you may be asked to discuss your research, or make a written or verbal presentation to members of the CPRC.

What kind of support do these supplements provide?

If you are a successful applicant, the CPRC will supplement your NSERC award by $7,500 per year up to a maximum of two years, provided you continue to hold your NSERC scholarship.

The CPRC will offer one new supplement annually.

How do you apply?

To be considered for this supplement, you must submit the following to the CPRC (see address below) by May 1st of the year in which you are awarded your postgraduate scholarship:

  • a copy of your notification of award from NSERC;
  • a copy of your successful NSERC application (Form 200) including transcripts as submitted to NSERC;
  • a two-page (12-point font) résumé describing your career goals and academic and extracurricular activities that support your interests in poultry research; and
  • a statement of endorsement from your research supervisor describing why you are particularly suitable for this award.

Review procedures

Applications will be evaluated and the successful candidate chosen according to the following criteria:

  • the applicant’s qualifications, such as academic excellence, research ability and potential, and communication skills;
  • the innovation potential;
  • the research methodology; and
  • the potential scientific or technical contribution to poultry science in a Canadian context.

Notification of decision

The CPRC will inform all applicants whether they were successful or not.

Payment

The first payment will be made directly to the applicant in one instalment upon confirmation of the commencement date of his or her NSERC scholarship. In subsequent years, payments will be made directly to the candidate upon request, once the CPRC has been informed that the NSERC scholarship will continue and upon receipt of a progress report not to exceed one page.
