What is the purpose of the supplement?

The Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative (PARC) invites graduate students to apply for a scholarship supplement to advance their training in multidisciplinary research related to climate change impacts and adaptation in the Prairie provinces. PARC facilitates research on the impacts of climate change on natural and social systems in the Prairie provinces and on the adaptation strategies that will be necessary to minimize the adverse impacts and to take advantage of the positive effects of climate change.

PARC is mandated to increase the number of highly qualified personnel in the emerging field of applied climate change research. Toward this goal, PARC provides support for supplementary multidisciplinary training to outstanding scholars who receive NSERC scholarships for their graduate research. The purpose of the $5,000 award is to fund activities that provide students with opportunities for collaboration across laboratories, disciplines, and the private and public sectors.

PARC encourages applications for proposed research training that bridge disciplines to address the vulnerability of natural and socio-economic systems to climate change and variability. PARC also encourages student training in the areas of knowledge transfer by working with decision makers in government and industry toward the adaptation of policy, planning processes and management practices.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

Graduate students who have been awarded an NSERC PGS, IPS, CGS or Vanier CGS may apply for the PARC Postgraduate Scholarship Supplement. The proposed activities must relate to research in climate change impacts and adaptation in the Prairie provinces. Students may apply for more than one award during their graduate training, but priority will be given to first-time applicants and to students in the early stages of their graduate program. Successful applicants must maintain full-time study during the year of the award.

How do you apply?

To be considered for this supplement, you must submit the following to PARC (see address below) by June 1 of the year in which you are awarded your postgraduate scholarship:

  • a copy of your Notification of Award document from NSERC;
  • a copy of your successful scholarship application (Form 200);
  • a two- to four-page statement (12-point font, double-spaced) describing how the proposed activities meet the objectives of the supplement. State how the activities will provide multidisciplinary training related to climate change impacts and adaptation, and how the activities will supplement your graduate program of studies. What would be the value-added role of the PARC supplement?;
  • a two-page (12-point font) curriculum vitae; and
  • a letter of support for the proposed activities from your academic supervisor or graduate program advisor.

Please note only complete applications will be reviewed.

Review procedures

Decisions will be based on the applicant’s potential for unique and outstanding contributions to the goals of PARC, and on the degree to which the proposed activities represent multidisciplinary training.

Notification of decision

Supplement winners will be announced in late June.

Payment

PARC is responsible for releasing the supplement. It must also ensure that the recipients of the supplements continue to hold NSERC postgraduate scholarships and meet the other requirements of the graduate supplements. Payment of the $5,000 supplement will be made directly to recipients in two instalments of $2,500 in September and January.
