Award Summary

The NSERC/Hydro-Québec Industrial Research Chair on Interactive Information Infrastructure for the Power Grid aims to develop enabling technology solutions for a more connected, more secure and more interoperable power grid. After a successful initial 5-year term, the new research program has been aligned with current priorities of the power industry. In coordination with Hydro-Québec, the proposed research program will explore, design, and implement new communication paradigms within power substations, new strategies for robust deployment and fast recovery from failures in networked sensors, and new data gathering and validation techniques that are robust to cyberattacks. The results of the proposed research will consist of recommendations, algorithms and testbeds that will allow Hydro-Québec and other utilities to better manage the next generation power grid, and better manage the cybersecurity risks inherent to its connected nature. Theprogram will train upwards of 20 specialists in these areas, who will be transferred to the Canadian industry at the end of their training; it will also lead to theoretical and practical advances in several areas, including noise modeling, cooperative communications, sensor networks, and data analytics.
