Summary
The development of an innovative technology project is a complex process with multiple, varied dimensions – technical, economic, financial, social, environmental, and so on. Design engineering constitutes the central link in this process. The nature of the problems that engineers must address often reflects viewpoints and interests that differ, diverge, and even conflict. To solve such problems, it requires skills that go well beyond the technical aspects alone. This reality raises questions about the nature of the training that our future engineers should receive in the field of design in order to be better prepared to act as the driving force behind the creation of technological innovations in corporate settings.This Chair’s mission is to innovate in the field of design education to improve the level and quality of design engineering education activities within the university. The Chair’s objectives and action plan focus on having students carry out design projects in partnership with industry. Through these projects, the Chair seeks to combine design engineering education with design engineering practice (along with all the other activities associated with design) in order to create a stimulating learning environment through a continuum of objectives and an inventory of required skills that transcend the breakdown by courses. This approach allows design to be placed at the centre of engineering education programs and provides students with a structured, coherent framework that enables them to acquire, through an incremental methodological process, collaborative and professionalizing intellectual and experiential design engineering skills.
