Summary
The NSERC/Agnico-Eagle Industrial Research Chair in Mineral Exploration develops new exploration methods using indicator minerals to discover new gold deposits. To develop effective, innovative exploration methods, the Chair studies both fundamental and applied issues. The use of indicator minerals in glacial sediments is especially important for the vast areas of Canada that have been shaped by glacial processes. The Chairholder is Professor Georges Beaudoin, an international expert on the geology of gold deposits, mineral chemistry and the use of indicator minerals in mineral exploration.
The Chair’s objectives are as follows:
- to document the chemical and isotopic composition of indicator minerals in orogenic gold deposits;
- to understand the physical and chemical processes that determine the proportions of major and trace elements in a selection of indicator minerals;
- to analyze variations in the chemical and isotopic compositions of indicator minerals selected by empirical and statistical methods to define the typical signature of orogenic gold deposits;
- to analyze the mechanical and chemical changes that indicator minerals undergo during transport, in order to estimate mode and distance of transport from the erosion site.
The new exploration methods developed by the Chair will help exploration firms to discover new gold resources and help government geological services to better estimate the mineral potential of given areas.
