Summary
Demographic change, changing consumer needs, and desires and expectations for increasing the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care services underpin the urgent need for innovation in post-secondary education and services for seniors. The CIHR/Schlegel Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Seniors' Care at Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Kitchener, Ontario, will engage faculty and practicing professionals in a five-year research and development agenda. This work will be unique by intentionally integrating education, service and research for mutual gain though the collaboration of Conestoga's School of Health and Life Sciences and Community Services with Schlegel Villages–a living lab with 11 Schlegel Care Villages, which are home to 2,500 seniors with 2,500 staff. As another unique approach, the Chair will infuse a knowledge-to-action framework through all work to address the current gap between evidence-informed knowledge and practice.
The Chairholder, Veronique Boscart, comes with an exemplary blend of clinical practice experience, graduate education, postdoctoral research related to knowledge to action applications, and teaching expertise. She will engage faculty and staff to change and evaluate curriculum and student experiences to improve graduates' knowledge, skills and attitudes for seniors' care; enhance processes and practices in long-term care settings to identify and narrow knowledge-practice gaps; conduct applied research studies to identify practices to improve quality of care; and develop faculty and professionals who will lead development projects to improve care and services. These initiatives will be supported by a new virtual Center for Advancing Seniors Care and a range of knowledge-dissemination activities. The results of this work will be of value to colleges and universities educating health and community service professionals, long-term care providers and policy makers as they develop strategies to improve care and services for seniors, and ultimately to the seniors and their families receiving better care.
