Chairholder since 2012
Summary
Emerging computing platforms (such as ARM hyperscale systems) promise significant improvements over traditional computing platforms (such as an order-of-magnitude reduction in space, power, and cooling requirements) but, even with these benefits, the new platforms will not see widespread acceptance unless they can run existing computing workloads. Emerging platforms also present new challenges in platform standardization and management.
The objective of this Chair is to address these challenges with open-source software. Initial research is focussed on bringing the Fedora open-source software environment to emerging ARM systems, while collaborating with industry and community partners in the standardization of boot and provisioning protocols. The Chair will also extend virtualization and management tools to work with emerging platforms and conduct trials of these platforms with commercial workloads to evaluate viability and best practices.
The Chairholder, Chris Tyler, is a long-term participant in, and contributor to, open-source software communities, and has worked on hardware and software projects ranging from modem design and embedded protocol converters to enterprise database systems. The NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Open Source Technology for Emerging Platforms (OSTEP) research program is undertaken in partnership with Red Hat, Inc.
