Summary

Electricity is fundamental for nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Fortunately our electricity supply has been working so well for so long that its importance is only fully appreciated when there is a power failure. In fact, our power systems are highly complex and face fundamental challenges both because of the constant increase in the demand for electricity due to the growth of our economy, and because of the expected additional demand from new devices such as electric vehicles.

The NSERC/Hydro-Québec/Schneider Electric Industrial Research Chair on Optimization supports the development of smart grids. A smart grid combines a traditional electrical power production, transmission, and distribution system with a two-way flow of information and energy between suppliers and consumers. This combination is expected to deliver energy savings, cost reductions, and increased reliability and security. However, it also brings new challenges, including:

  • how to use the existing network more efficiently?
  • how to incorporate renewable energy such as wind and solar?
  • how to store energy until it is needed?
  • how to include customers as active participants in the grid operation?

Professor Anjos is a world-leading expert in mathematical optimization, and will lead the Chair’s ambitious research program to optimize the operations and maintenance of large-scale electric power systems, to maximize the amount of energy transmitted by complex power grids, and to manage all the demands for electricity so as to allow us the electricity to be delivered as efficiently as possible. Hydro-Québec is a major international utility that is actively implementing various aspects of the smart grid in Québec. Schneider Electric is a major international provider of electrical equipment and energy management services for the smart grid. These two partners will contribute their wealth of expertise to ensure that the work pursued by the Chair's team will lead to practical solutions for real-world power grids. Ultimately the Chair's activities will contribute to ensuring reliable and sustainable power supplies to all Canadians for years to come.
