Summary
Wood has been a material of choice in Canadian building construction. It is the only renewable building material and has the lowest environmental impact when forest resources are managed appropriately. While the vast majority of building professionals recognize the many advantages of using wood for its appearance, they also agree that there are many obstacles to its widespread adoption. In order to address this issue, the Chair program aims to develop innovative products and finishing and densification processes for wood products.
The primary objective of the chair is to facilitate the training of professionals specialized in finishing and densifying wood products. Students at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels will take part in Chair activities. The secondary objective is to develop high-value-added indoor wood products that are economically and technically viable and address the key gaps that are still associated with indoor wood products. The work will allow Canada and participating partners to position themselves as world leaders in the finishing and densification of indoor wood products.
The work included in the research program will help to develop indoor wood products that meet the needs of building professionals in terms of mechanical performance, fire resistance and aesthetics. The researchers will consider the economic and environmental viability of the products developed to ensure their relevance and sustainability. The success of this program will be ensured by establishing a unique industrial consortium made up of industrial partners positioned throughout the value chain for finishing and densifying appearance products: a raw-material supplier, a finishing and densification solution formulator and end users (wood flooring, doors and furniture).
The Chairholder, Véronic Landry, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Wood and Forest Science, Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics (FFGG), at Laval University since April 2017. Prior to this, she worked for FPInnovations as an industrial researcher for 10 years. Her primary research interests focus on the development and characterization of wood finishes that have a low environmental impact and are stimuli-sensitive and the chemical densification of wood products.
