Summary

Biomedical technologies are present everywhere in our society. Over the years, they have made it possible to develop medical procedures that are more effective, precise and reproducible and less invasive. The Chair’s research program will be carried out through a collaboration between Professor Luc Beaulieu, a recognized expert on radiation physics applied to medicine, and Elekta, one of the largest manufacturers of biomedical equipment used in radiation therapy.

For over 17 years, Dr. Beaulieu has been conducting research aimed at increasing the accuracy of radiation oncology treatments. He has over 185 scientific publications to his credit and has made several hundred presentations at various national and international conferences. His research program includes numerous examples of collaborative projects with partners from the biomedical industry, including knowledge translation and commercialization activities. The Chair has cemented the collaboration between Dr. Beaulieu and Elekta that began in 2004.

The Chair’s primary goal is to improve the approaches used in treating cancer, by developing the next generation of biomedical systems and equipment applied to brachytherapy (the oldest form of radiation therapy). The objectives of the Chair’s research program range from validation of principal to pre-commercial development, which includes human/system interactions, system validation and workflow optimization. The Chair’s activities will also ensure that these new technologies are effectively integrated into clinical practice. Some of the approaches proposed in the research program also apply to other medical procedures using needles or catheters and thus afford a number of new development opportunities.

The Chair’s research program is designed to develop new biomedical technologies that will be used to treat cancer in clinics in Canada and other countries.
