NSERC welcomes its new president, Dr. Alejandro Adem
Building a strong future to advance research and innovation in Canada

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is pleased to welcome Dr. Alejandro Adem as its new president, effective October 1, 2019.
As a highly accomplished researcher in the field of mathematics and a faculty member at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Adem has significant leadership experience in the research and innovation ecosystem.
“Dr. Adem possesses extensive knowledge in fundamental research and expertise in national and international partnership programs that support research in Canada,” said Dr. Digvir S. Jayas, Interim President of NSERC. “His tireless efforts to strengthen collaborations and launch the next generation of researchers make him an excellent choice as NSERC’s next leader. I would like to congratulate Dr. Adem on his appointment and assure him of my full support.”
Well versed with ISED and the tri-agencies through his role as Chief Executive Officer and Scientific Director at Mitacs, Dr. Adem has also received numerous NSERC research grants throughout his academic career and has held the Canada Research Chair in Algebraic Topology and Group Cohomology.
Dr. Adem is an enthusiastic supporter of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). In his role on the Advisory Board of the Association for Women in Mathematics and as a member of the International Mathematical Union’s Committee for Women in Mathematics, he has worked to increase the participation and visibility of women in mathematics.
“From investing in the future, to fuelling discoveries and encouraging greater collaboration in Canadian R&D, NSERC’s undeniable impact on the research and innovation ecosystem cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Adem. “It is with great enthusiasm that I look forward to leading NSERC as it builds on the meaningful relationships it has forged with its researchers, and the communities to which it owes its internationally recognized excellence.”
