Federal granting agencies introduce new financial guide

December 18, 2019

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) have introduced a new Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration. The new Guide streamlines and simplifies the administration and use of grant funds by creating a “principles-based” approach to financial administration.

This new approach is expected to promote efficiencies, reduce burden, and provide greater flexibility to administering institutions and grant recipients in ensuring the appropriate accountability and use of grant funds.

Twelve institutions have collaborated with the three federal granting agencies to “pilot” the new Guide, and now rely on it for administering grant funds. All other institutions - i.e., those currently using the existing TAFAG are expected to adopt the new Guide as of April 1, 2020.

To find out more, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions and the page outlining Roles and Responsibilities for both researchers and institutional administrators.

The granting agencies plan to host a number of webinars for the research community – faculty members as well as administration officials at eligible institutions – later this year and into 2020.
