Tri-agency research investments awarded to latest cohort of talented scholarship and fellowship recipients

Canada’s three federal research granting agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) are pleased to announce funding of $190 million has been awarded to the latest cohort of tri-agency scholarship and fellowship recipients. This significant investment will enable talented emerging researchers to further develop research excellence and build global links under the mentorship of research leaders.
In total, up to 4,500 scholarships and fellowships have been awarded for research training at Canadian institutions under the following programs:
- Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships
- Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
- The Canada Graduate Scholarships (Doctoral Program and Master's Scholarships)
- The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements
The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral Program will also provide a prestigious recognition to a select number of award holders through the Canada Graduate Scholarships to Honour Nelson Mandela. This year, up to 12 doctoral students will be recognized with this honorary mention from CIHR and SSHRC.
The 2019-2020 scholarship and fellowship recipients will explore various topics that have an impact on Canadians including the future of global food security, the intersections of Indigenous art and politics, the impacts of traumatic brain injury on individuals who are homeless, innovative surgical technologies, the mental health impacts of climate change in Canada’s North, artificial intelligence, water quality and manufacturing technologies.
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships provide research funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth. A Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is valued at $70,000 per year, for two years and 70 fellowships are awarded annually.
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships help Canadian institutions attract and retain highly qualified doctoral students in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health research, establishing Canada as a global centre for research excellence and higher training. Recipients of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships demonstrate leadership skills and a high level of scholarly achievement in graduate studies. A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is valued at $50,000 per year, for three years and up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually.
Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral – (CGS D) Program supports high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in all academic disciplines. This support allows doctoral students to fully concentrate on their studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and to contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards. A CGS D is valued at $35,000 for a duration of 36 months, and 1,000 scholarships are awarded annually.
The Canadian Graduate Scholarship Master’s – (CGS M) Program helps develop research skills and assists in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. A CGS M is valued at $17,500 for a duration of 12 months, and 3,000 scholarships are awarded annually. The CGS M results will be posted on CIHR’s, NSERC’s and SSHRC’s websites as they are confirmed.
The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements provide additional supplements of up to $6,000 to active CGS (master’s or doctoral) holders or eligible Vanier CGS holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research studies outside Canada for a defined period. The supplement supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global links and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad.
The Canada Graduate Scholarships to Honour Nelson Mandela are jointly administered by CIHR and SSHRC and are an honorary mention that applies for the duration of the CGS D award. They recognize and support graduate students conducting research in one or more of the five areas that Nelson Mandela championed during his lifetime: national unity; democracy, freedom and human rights; leadership; children’s participation in society; and children’s health. SSHRC will award the honour to up to 10 CGS D recipients, and CIHR will award the honour to two CGS D recipients.
