NSERC celebrates the Little Inventors oceans challenge exhibition launch and World Oceans Day
July 7, 2021
On June 8, 2021, NSERC held an event celebrating World Oceans Day and the launch of the Little Inventors Mission: Protect our oceans virtual exhibition, in collaboration with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO) and Little Inventors.
As an official UN Oceans Decade event, Secretary General of CCUNESCO Roda Muse brought greetings and spoke on the importance of our oceans. Other speakers included Little Inventors founder Dominic Wilcox and Ali Ehsassi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
In the spirit of this year’s oceans challenge, close to 800 little inventors submitted their invention ideas to improve oceans health. 15 finalists were selected to take part in the virtual exhibit, showcasing the range and breadth of ideas from youth across Canada.
Members of the Canadian Coast Guard announced the two winners of this year’s challenge:
- ASP Déchets 0.1 — An octopus shaped invention that collects harmful waste and converts it into self-powering energy by Benjamin, age 9
- The Cleaner Picker Upper — A submarine-like invention which uses magnets and vacuums to collect waste and a filtering system to clean pollutants by Ava, age 10
This event and the oceans challenge would not have been possible without the support of a wide range of partners contributing to its success.
