NSERC 2030: Advancing natural sciences and engineering research in Canada

NSERC is about to embark on a series of activities that will lead to the development of a new long-term strategic plan, NSERC 2030. This plan will reflect Canada’s priorities for the advancement of natural sciences and engineering research. It will also outline a vision, mission, and implementation strategy, and will provide insight on the execution of NSERC’s mandate as the largest natural sciences and engineering research funding agency in Canada.

Over the next few months, NSERC will be engaging with various stakeholders to gather ideas and feedback through surveys, targeted interviews, and discussions. Throughout the strategic planning process, NSERC will use an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens in its approach and will be deliberate in providing opportunities for all voices to be heard. An Indigenous engagement plan has also been developed to foster collaboration and input.

In addition to these engagement activities, NSERC tasked the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) last year to conduct an assessment of international best practices and opportunities for funding natural sciences and engineering research. The CCA report is expected to be released in early May 2021.

“We are looking forward to connecting with the research community in the context of this strategic planning exercise to learn more about its priorities and how we can work together to make great strides in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. It is important to us at NSERC to involve the community at every phase to design an actionable and inclusive plan.”
—Professor Alejandro Adem, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

Feedback from these engagement activities will help formulate key findings and inform the next phases of our strategic planning process. Should you have any questions or feedback to share with us, please contact us at NSERC2030CRSNG@nserc-crsng.gc.ca.
