Launch of Discovery Grants Program Five-Year Review

Representing about one third of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) annual budget, the Discovery Grants Program is one of our largest programs. This program alone is currently supporting more than 9,800 researchers from a variety of science and engineering disciplines at campuses across the country.

As part of an ongoing commitment to ensure our programs are relevant and effective at meeting their objectives, NSERC has launched the next five-year review of the Discovery Grants Program. The current evaluation is a follow-up from changes to the peer review process that were introduced in 2009 and 2010 and aims to assess the extent to which the program is achieving its intended outcomes in light of those changes. The evaluation will use multiple lines of evidence and entail a review of the results by an international panel of experts.

The first in a series of evaluation activities is an on-line survey of current Discovery Grant holders and applicants to the program since 2009 as well as highly qualified personnel (HQP) supported through the program. In addition, NSERC will be consulting with evaluation group members and chairs, scientific societies, and university administrators.

Although the stakeholders noted above will be contacted directly to take part in the program evaluation, other interested researchers and stakeholders are encouraged to provide their comments and feedback on the program by sending an e-mail to
