Daryl Haggard
Department of Physics
Daryl Haggard, a professor at McGill University’s Department of Physics and Trottier Space Institute, delves into the darkest depths of the cosmos, focusing on black holes and neutron stars. Her research, aimed at unraveling the mysteries of these cosmic objects, expands our understanding of the universe and charts new frontiers for astrophysics.
Haggard’s work with the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration has been groundbreaking. She contributed to capturing the first-ever images of a black hole’s shadow, a feat that captivated the world in 2019, and again in 2022, with an image of the Milky Way’s own black hole. Moreover, her team’s joint detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation from a neutron star merger in 2017 revolutionized multi-messenger astronomy. These discoveries not only confirmed long-standing theories, but also ushered in a new era of observing the cosmos.
In the future, Haggard’s research promises to unlock deeper insights into the fundamental workings of the universe, potentially revealing more about the origins of celestial phenomena and even the nature of spacetime itself. As she continues to push the boundaries of astrophysical knowledge, her work holds the key to inspiring future generations of scientists and fostering international collaboration in space exploration.
