Profile
François Ouellette
Optech
Cégep André-Laurendeau
Chair title
NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Optical Processes and Instrumentation
Chair program
Industrial Research Chairs program
Role
Chairholder since 2013
Summary
The research will focus on three main areas:
- instrumentation for optical sensors,
- improvement and automation of fabrication processes of Bragg grating-based sensors and optical components, and
- development of high-performance optical components for industrial fibre lasers.
The Chair will develop low-cost, modular, optical sensor interrogation devices by encouraging the use of these sensors in new industrial applications. The development of new technologies in fibre optics for Bragg grating-based automated fabrication components will also focus on lowering production costs while extending the use of this technology to new types of fibre optics, such as fluoride fibre, through the use of new lasers with very short pulses (femtosecond). Lastly, the Chair will develop fabricating techniques based on the microassembly of optical components for industrial fibre laser applications.
The Chairholder has over thirty years of experience in the field of optics, having worked as a researcher, a teacher, an entrepreneur and an R&D manager in an industrial setting. Among other things, he has contributed to the development of the Bragg grating technology in fibre optics with several inventions that have lead to commercial applications and industrial processes. He brings recognized scientific knowledge as well as industrial experience to the Research Chair.
The work of the Chair will help develop innovative technologies that will improve the productivity of industrial processes, and thereby contribute to the economic development of Canadian society. To do this, the Chair will greatly benefit from its association with Optech, the expertise of its staff, its facilities and the latest equipment in the field of optics. Through its activities, the chair will enable partner companies to improve their fabrication processes and develop new products that will help them grow in the highly competitive environment of advanced technologies.
